Left unchecked, our calendar would continue to deviate from the solar year, leading to all sorts of negative consequences. So, every four years we get a bonus day to stay on track! ๐Ÿ™Œ

We can use Moku:Go to demonstrate this phenomenon. Using the Phasemeter instrument, we can measure a signal with a period of 365.2566363 ฮผs, or 2.378 kHz on Input A. The reference frequency of Input B corresponds to Earth time (period 365 ฮผs, or 2.74 kHz). The phase of B relative to A drifts over time and accumulates a leap cycle every ~0.52 seconds. Scaling back up to Earth time gives us around 520,000 days (approximately 1,424 years) โ€” or the time it would take for the Earth calendar to drift by an entire year relative to the sun!
